Carved 9th century cliff mural found in Qinghai

A Buddhist carved mural dating back some 1,300 years was recently found in Qilian county, Qinghai province.

The mural, which is in the style of the traditional Buddhist thangka painting, is carved out of a 3-m-high cliff that covers a total area of 1.7 sq m.

Experts believe it to be the work of Tibetan Buddhist monks in the area in 9th century AD. They are therefore invaluable for research into Tibetan Buddhism of that period.
