In the second year of Emperor Xianzong's reign in the Yuan Dynasty (1252), Kublai called in vPhags-pa to meet him in an army camp to discuss the relations between Tibetan religious leaders and Mongol royal families and conferred upon him the title of Lama (grand master). In the ninth year of Emperor Xianzong's reign (1259), vPhags-pa arrived at the capital to meet Kublai. In the following year, he was conferred upon a title of State Tutor. In the sixthe year of Zhiyuan (1269), vPhagas-pa finished creating the vPhags-pa script (new Mongolian script) by order of Kublai. Kublai immediately issued an imperial edict to put it in use. Next year, vPhags-pas was promoted as Imperial Tutor.
