Panchen Lama visits exhibition of Tibetan culture and history

The 11th Panchen Lama, Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, Thursday praised an exhibition in Beijing of Tibetan history and culture as true to Tibet's past and present.

At the exhibition at the Muesum of Tibet Culture, the Panchen Lama listened attentively to the guide and raised questions at times.

The exhibition A Precious Mirror to the Snow-Covered Land, held by the China Tibetology Research Center, displays antiquities from throughout Tibet's history and illustrations of the evolution of Tibetan society.

After his visit, the Panchen Lama said, I am fully confident of the future of my hometown, as the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held its fifth meeting of the work of Tibet not long ago.

At the meeting in Beijing from Jan. 18 to 20, senior leaders outlined plans to achieve leapfrog development and stability in Tibet Autonomous Region.

The 11th Panchen Lama, also a member of the national committee of China's top political advisory body, is one of the two most senior living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism.

The exhibition is the first event at the Museum of Tibet Culture, which opened the same day on March 28 to mark the 51th anniversary of the emancipation of serfs in Tibet.

China designated March 28 as an annual Serfs Emancipation Day last year to mark the date on which about 1 million Tibetan serfs, accounting for more than 90 percent of the Tibetan population, were freed in 1959.
