Tibet Autonomous Region in the southwest of China has reportedly received a total of 6,371,186 tourists in the past ten months with the total tourist revenue hitting around 64.5446 billion yuan, up 20.0% and 45.1% year-on-year respectively, according to a senior official of the regional tourism bureau.
According to Tibet Tourism Bureau, both tourist capacity and revenue soared to a historical new high between January and October while their consumption in the tourist market resumed to the volume before the "3.14 Riots" in 2008 in Lhasa.
Statistics showed the tourist revenue increased at a rate higher than the tourist capacity between January and October, said Wang Songping, deputy director of Tibet Tourism Bureau.
"When traveling in Tibet, each tourist used to spend more than 1,000 yuan each time, But the figure dropped dramatically after the '3.14 Riots'. In the first ten months, the figure again exceeded 1,000 yuan," said Wang.
After the "3.14 Riots", the regional tourism departments took many measures to stimulate the depressed tourist market, which had achieved good results within a short period.
Besides, the tourist department called on travel agencies, hotels and places of tourist attractions to cut price and came up with various incentive programs.
A series of tourist products have been marketed during the off season, which in turn have drawn more people to Tibet, breaking through the bottleneck that hinders the progress of tourism in this season.
With improved tourist services, the number of overseas tourists has soared remarkably since Tibet was opened wider to the outside world.
From January to October, around 203,938 foreign tourists have visited the region, bringing a total of 936.3 million US dollars in earnings, indicating an increase of 34.1% and 61.6% respectively over the same period of last year.
