Cataract surgery to be included in medical claims in pastoral areas

Cataract surgery will be included in medical claims system for farmers and herdsmen in TAR.

There are 14,000 cataract blinds among 30,000 blinds in TAR, with an annual increase of 1,500 per year. Medical experts believe that hypoxia alpine climate and strong ultraviolet radiation are the main reasons for Tibetans having cataracts. And the policy to put cataract surgery into medical claims system will be helpful for farmers and herdsmen in the agricultural and pastoral areas to receive treatments timely.

Free medical health care system in agricultural and pastoral areas is benefiting farmers and herdsmen in Tibet. Free medical care standard for Tibetans has been raised to 140 yuan per capita.

In 2008, 2,204,200 Tibetans participated in personal health care system in agricultural and pastoral areas, accounting for 93.37 percent of the total number in TAR. 95.499 million yuan has been used as home health care compensation for 3,474,609 Tibetans.
