On January 21, TAR United Front Work Department held a meeting to celebrate the 'Serf Emancipation Day' setting in Tibet. Many Noncommunist representatives expressed their supports for the establishment of this holiday.
Tupden Kedup, vice president of the Tourism Institute of Tibet University said:"To set up this holiday as if to light a torch. However, this torch is just the democratic reform in 1959 for Tibet. When we review the history of the old Tibet, and then focus on the nowaday Tibet, we will realize the significance of democratic reform deeply."
"It's very necessary to designate March 28 as an annual 'Serfs Emancipation Day'. This holiday will be helpful to remind people the history of old Tibet and inspire their patriotism, "Ngawang Choeta, deputy director of the management committee of Jokhang Temple said.
Dbyangscan Drolkar, niece of the 10th Panchen and the member of TAR People's Political Consultative Conference Standing Committee, expressed that enormous changes had taken place in the past 50 years in Tibet, and this is the best response to the feudal serfdom in old Tibet. "To set up 'Serf EmancipationDay' is all the Tibetans' wills and aspirations. At the same time, it's the best gift to commemorate 50 years of Tibet democratic reform. All the Tibetans shouldn't forget the misery past, and to treasure the good happy life nowadays. "
