Editor’s Note: On Feb. 22nd, 2012, the first day of Tibetan New Year (Losar), a grand celebration was held in Beijing Tibet High School (a school exclusively and specially for Tibetan students). A girl, named Tenzin Chodron made a speech on behalf of the whole students. Following is the whole text:
Distinguished guests, dear teachers and fellow students:
Good morning and Happy Tibetan New year, everyone!
I am in Class One of Senior Grade One, and my name is Tenzin Chodron. Today, it is a great honor for me to address you here on behalf of every student in my school.
Losar is the most important traditional festival for Tibetans. In Tibet, my hometown, whenever Losar comes, we will put on our traditional costumes, sitting together with family members to eat Guthku (a kind of dumpling), a custom in the Tibetan New Year Eve while watching Tibetan New Year Gala on TV.
Now, we are studying here in Beijing (capital of People’s Republic of China), which is far away from our hometown, and we cannot have a reunion with our family. But we do not feel lonely at all. Because, our school is the other "home" of ours, and teachers in school are as nice as our family members. In our daily study and life, they give us motherly care and help, making us feel the warmth of family. To celebrate Losar, our school purchased a great many of presents and arranged a variety of activities for us. We make butter tea and Guthku together, playing local games of our homes. All of these make us feel very joyful and warm in our heart.
It is so excited for us to spend Losar in Beijing, but it is even luckier for us to be schooled here.
As for us, we carry on shoulders high expectations from our hometown, our family members, our people and our motherland—China as well. People in Beijing provide us with superior studying and living environment and rich educational resources for us, thanks to the good policies of the central government of the People’s Republic of China!
Tibet is one of the countless shining pearls in China, our homeland! Without the support and blessing of our great motherland, Tibet’s beauty and glory will be nothing at all. As a young Tibetan of a new generation, we should not only study hard, but also become strong guardians to promote the solidarity of each ethnic nationality and safeguard the unity of our homeland. Because we are well aware that only as a member of the big family of our motherland can Tibet maintain its stability and prosperity and Tibetans in our hometown live a happy and peaceful life.
As students, we cannot do something big now. However, we will bear our mission in mind, which is to study hard in order to reciprocate our motherland, and become a useful person to build a more prosperous and richer hometown and motherland as well!
Lastly, I sincerely wish everyone present here all the best in your work and health in the New Year!
Tashi Delek!
