Over 6,000 Tibetan children with congenital heart disease are expected to get cured free within two years, stated a senior Tibetan official at a recent governmental press conference.
Phurbu Drolma, director-general of Tibet Health Department, made the statement in her speech and added that Tibet will build up a dynamic screening and treatment system to ensure that every new screened case will get treated and cured.
Statistics show that Tibet has about 10,000 children with congenital heart disease and so far, over 3,000 children have recovered with free treatment.
Due to high-altitude oxygen deficiency, the incidence of congenital heart disease in Tibet is much higher than that in plain areas, said Phurbu Drolma.
According to the 2005-2006 census data of local students, the rate amounted to 12‰-14‰ in Tibet without counting those dying of disease and unschooled sick children, while the rate is usually 6‰-8‰ in plain areas.
