In recent years, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) has been reinforcing its conservation of forestry and protection of ecological environment by making use of the available resources to alleviate the consumption of firewood in daily life, forbidding disafforestation and transforming the economic development mode of forest zone in the hope of protecting the primeval forest on the "roof of the world"
Nyingchi, located in east of TAR, is known as "the Tibetan breadbasket" for its pleasant climate and abundant forest resources thanks to its unique natural and climate conditions. Ranking as the third largest woodland in China, Nyingchi timberland covers a total area of 3.74 million hectares including 2.64 million hectares of forest that accounts for 46.09% of the land. It is also one of the best preserved primeval forests in China titled with "reservoir of genes" for its diversified species of plants, which plays a key role in the protection of the climate and ecological environment of TAR, China and even southeast Asia.
Apart from the present preservation, a total of 300 million yuan has been invested on tree planting in urban areas, major traffic routes and wonderland, and reclaiming land to forests in Nyingchi area. Meanwhile, the government speeded up creating a long-term compensation mechanisim to address the ecological issues, according to Tsewang Gyumey, head of Nyingchi Forestry Bureau, TAR.
By the end of 2009, the forestry ecological compensation programme had already covered 2.97 million hectares of forest, including 1.13 some hectares of local welfare forests and 1.83 million of key welfare forests taking up 92.8% of the whole forest area.
