Nyangri Folk Art Troupe has won a wide reputation in Lhasa with its several decades effort in performing Tibetan opera. Presently, people can go to Langma Hall or drive around ten minutes to Nyangri Folk Garden to enjoy the traditional orthdox Tibetan opera which can only be shown in some special festivals, such as Shoton Festival.

Set up at the end of 1970s, all the performers of Nyangri Folk Art Troupe are local farmers. In the middle of 1980s, Mr. Gelong, a Tibetan opera lover joined in, along with his many new ideas and ardour on art, who soon was elected as the promoter of Tibetan opera team. Since then, the team cooperated and exchanged with other professional teams and experts on this area were also invited to provide training for the preformers.

With their hard-working, the troupe not only can perform five of the "Eight Biggest Tibetan Opera", but also arrange many dramatic skit close to farmers' life. As early as several months ahead of Ongkor Festival, local governments and community neighborhood committees in Lhasa will throng to give an invitaion.

"In the past, we only perform in three festivals: Tibetan New Year, Ongkor Festival and Shoton Festival. Each performance was not easy for us, no equipment, no wage, all the earnings only enough to boil the pot. While, we can present 800-plus performances in one year now, which has high popularity among local people. This is the greatest happiness for us, " said an aged artist.
