Photo from Xinhua shows the local Tibetans are welcoming the auto team driving from Qinghai-Tibet highway to the Potala Palace in Lhasa.
A gala with people of different ethnic groups from Tibet, Sichuan and Qinghai in attendance was held on December 25, 1954 to celebrate the Qinghai-Tibet, Sichuan-Tibet highways officially opened to traffic.
The inscription for Qinghai-Tibet and Sichuan-Tibet highways from Chairman Mao Zedong was "Celebrate the opening of Qinghai-Tibet and Sichuan-Tibet highways, consolidate the unity of people from all ethnic groups, and make contributions to our motherland!"
These two highways are playing the important roles in developing the economy and culture in Tibet, Sichuan and Qinghai areas.
