Tibetan 'Duixie' flashing in Beijing

90 Tibetan farmers from Lhaze County of Xigaze Prefecture brought their Tibetan singing and dancing "Duixie" (a kind of traditional Tibetan dance) to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and received warm welcome.

"I really can't believe that we Tibetan farmers can display the new look of Tibetan new farmers to the world with our dancing and singing though we can't speak any mandarin," said Dawa, a 43-year-old Tibetan farmer when recalling their performance at the Great Hall of the People.

What makes Dawa more surprised is that this year he can earn RMB15,000 (about 1,875 US dollars) by "Duixie" performance. Before taking part in the farmers' art troupe, he could only get RMB2,000 (about 250 US dollars) as 8 members of Dawa's family is living on 6 mu (mu, a Chinese unit of area equals to 1/15 of a hectare) Qingke highland barley planting and his working earning.

Founded in November 2005, Lhaze Farmer Art Troupe has 90 members including 50 actors and 40 actresses. Among them, the eldest one is 43 and the youngest is only 17 years old. With the related departments' help, they have put the traditional Tibetan village folk singing and dancing to the market and commercial performances bring about RMB10,000 (about 1,250 US dollars) to every member.

"Duixie" is the traditional folk singing and dancing of Tibetan village as well as a kind of integrated art of song, dance and music performed by a kind of Tibetan guitar. It is popular in the upper reach of Yarlung Zangbo.

"We found during our investigation that about 50,000 Tibetan farmers and herders in Lhaze could perform 'Duixie', so we decided to organize an art troupe to develop the traditional art together with poverty-alleviation," told by Pubu Wensheng, an official in charge of poverty-alleviation of Xigaze.

Pubu Wensheng introduces that over 300,000 Tibetans have relation to "Duixie" and they paln to combine the traditional "Duixie" with Tibetan tourism market to let more and more people understand this kind of art. They believe that more and more Tibetans will step onto a road to rich and Tibetan "Duixie" will also be better developed.
