On the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the people in northwest China's Qinghai Province will produce special kinds of moon cakes with local characteristic to welcome the festival. At the opening ceremony of the 13th Ping'an Culture and Arts Festival in Ping’an District, Haidong City, Qinghai Province on September 27, in addition to an Ox-head banquet and display of all kinds of handmade moon cakes, the most eye-catching attraction was a 130 kilogram, 1.2 meter-long "Moon Cake King".
Ping'an moon cakes are impressive with beautiful patterns, bright colors, and a sweet fragrance. They’re mainly made of flour mixed with more than ten other kinds of ingredients, such as safflower, Trigonella foenum-graecum. With expert craftsmanship, they can be made into a variety of styles and shapes and given different meanings.
The Qinghai Moon Cake King was sold at an auction for 20,000 yuan (3,011 US dollars) at the 13th Ping’an Culture and Arts Festival in Ping’an District, Haidong City, Qinghai Province on September 27. Photo shows the auction winner poses for a picture with the giant moon cake.
