Religious sects, temples and altars
The public religious activities in Nyingchi have inherited the common characteristics of Tibetan Buddhism. Differences in customs and traditions of different minority groups have produced a variety of religious sects.

Trace Nyingma Sect's holy ancestors (picture gallery) 2011-01-25
Thupten Dojezhag Monastery, the ancestral monastery of Nyingma Sect or the Red School of Tibetan Buddhism, is located in Gonggar, Lhoka Prefecture of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
Unique Bon religion 2005-03-10
Tibetan Buddhism carries the cream of the Bon religion. So far as the system is concerned, however, Tibetan Buddhism is fundamentally different from that primitive religion. Tibetan Buddhism has its own system in doctrines, sutras, disciplines, and monk and monastery rules and regulations.
Divination practices unique to the Bon Religion and related rituals 2005-02-24
People living in the remote mountainous areas in east Tibet still practice divination for good weather, with lettered masters called "Awu Gungba" and unlettered ones "Shiba".
Gagyu Sect 2005-02-24
Founded in the 11th century, the Gagyu Sect pays high importance to Tantric practices, which are spread orally. Hence the name Gagyu, which means oral transmission.
Saskya Sect 2005-02-24
The Saskya Sect came into existence in the 11th century. the Sect's Doctrines have been handed down for generations by the Kun clan. Kun means "hostility"in Tibetan. The clan has hen eulogized as the living Buddha.
Kargyu Sect 2005-02-24
Kargyu means dissemination and inheritance in Tibetan. The Kargyu Sect is called the White Religion because monks dress in white robes.
Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism 2005-02-24
This Buddhist sect requires its followers to strictly abide by its disciplines. The Gelug monks usually wear yellow peach-shaped hats, and so it is also known as the Yellow Sect.
BKa'-gdams Sect 2005-02-24
The bka'-gdams Sect was the first sect to appear during the Later Period of Buddhism in Tibet. "bKa" means "Buddhism" in the Tibetan language, and "gdams" means "teach."
Gagyu Sect of Tibetan Buddhism 2005-02-24
The Buddhist Gagyu Sect has exerted great influence on Tibetan history. In Tibetan, “Ga” means “statement of the Buddha” and “gyu” means “carry forward”.
