The Potala Palace Square is an important part of the Potala Palace, one of the world's listed cultural heritages in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
The square has long been a venue for major events and celebrations. It can holds 40,000 people.
In 2005, the expansion and maintenance project of the Potala Palace Square was started and included brick-paving, building greenbelts and repairing of the lake area and river system, costing 150 million yuan.
The total area of renovated square hit 180,000 square meters. And the magnificence of the Potala Palace stands out even more clearly after it was renovated.
The Potala Palace is ocated in the northwestern corner of Lhasa, overlooking the Lhasa River valley. It was first built by Songtsan Gambo in the 7th century, and was expanded during the 17th century. The grand palace features the splendid ancient Tibetan architecture .
