International community continues to mourn with China over devastating landslide

The world has continued to mourn the loss of life from the devastating landslides in northwest China, with international leaders expressing hope the people will rebuild their homeland as soon as possible.

As of Wednesday evening, the death toll from the downpour-triggered disaster in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province on Aug. 8stood at 1,287, with 457 still missing. Extensive rescue and relief efforts are continuing.

While offering their heartfelt condolences, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzadin Waddaulah, on behalf of the Brunei government and people, extended condolences to China over the catastrophe and voiced confidence that the Chinese people would overcome the natural disaster.

On behalf of the Cambodian government and people, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen extended his profound sympathies and deepest condolences to Chinese government and people.

Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah conveyed sincere condolences to the Chinese people over the deadly landslide.

Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov sent his heartfelt condolences and Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki expressed his deep grief over China's heavy loss of life and offered profound condolences to the Chinese people.

President of the Central African Republic Francois Bozize Yangouvonda also conveyed profound sympathies and sincere condolences to the Chinese people over the deadly landslide.

On behalf of the Malian people, President Amadou Toumani Toure extended his profound sympathies and deepest condolences to the Chinese people.

President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso voiced wholehearted sympathies and deepest condolences to Chinese people on behalf of the Congolese government and people and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz sent his sincere condolences.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf extended deep sympathy to the Chinese people, saying his country was willing to support China's rescue and relief work.

On behalf of the Brazilian people, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also extended deep sympathy to the mudslide-ravaged region in China, hoping the people affected would rebuild their homeland and resume a normal life soon .

Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf voiced his grief and condolences to the Chinese people.

Monaco's Prince Albert II expressed his deep grief over China's heavy loss of life and offered profound condolences to the Chinese people.

Albanian Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli and Prime Minister Sali Berisha sent their heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to China.

Communicating to the Chinese people his deep grief and condolences, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa said he was confident the Chinese government and Chinese people would prevail over the catastrophe.

Administrator of the United Nations Development Program Helen Clark expressed the organization's willingness to support China's relief work and reconstruction efforts.

Other leaders to offer their condolences included Greek President Karolos Papoulias, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, Serbian President Boris Tadic, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and French Senate President Gerard Larcher.
