A total of 17 weather stations will be built later this year in Tibet's Xigaze Prefecture -- considered as the granary of the region, according to the Meteorological Bureau of Tibet on Saturday.
Upon completion of the stations, all the counties in Xigaze will have weather stations and losses caused by climatic disasters to grain production will also be reduced substantially.
The Xigaze Prefecture in southwestern Tibet is the agricultural base of the whole region, accounting for more than one quarter of Tibet's grain production.
But Xigaze now has only ten weather observatory stations on its land of 182,000 sq km and the seats of ten counties have no weather stations.
The small number of weather stations and the shortage of exploration resources have restricted the prefecture's capability of inspection and warning system of meteorological disasters, as well as its ability of disaster prevention and reduction.
Among the 17 weather stations, eleven county-level ones will be built in counties include Panam, Kyirong, Sakya and Khangman. The other six are at township level, said Xigaze's weather bureau.
