The traditional Shangri-La Horse Racing Festival will be held during the Dragon Boat Festival (May 31 – June 1), according to a press conference held on May 17th by Shangri-La city in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
The annually Horse Racing Festival held in May is the oldest traditional, ethnic event and the people's most beloved festival in Shangri-La. Activities at the festival include: equestrian competitions in speed, skill, and galloping; traditional athletic folk games such as archery and crossbow, and exhibitions of intangible cultural heritage products relating to horses.
Art shows, equestrian performances, music concerts, and an international cross-country motorcycle Grand Prix will also be held during the festival.
Shangri-La, located in northwest Yunnan Province, is a "delta region" among Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet where three major rivers (the Jinsha River, Lancang River, and Nujiang River) converge. This famous scenic area has been the Tibetans' ideal paradise.
