The Labrang Monastery, one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism in northwest China's Gansu province, will get a comprehensive face-lift for better cultural protection.
The over 300-year-old monastery, located in the Gannan Tibet Autonomous Prefecture, is undergoing an infrastructure reconstruction project at present, especially for road maintenance.
The massive face-lift project has received an investment of 300 million yuan from the central government and will start soon after the road maintenance.
Known as the "Vatican of the Orient", the Labrang Monastery was built by Jiamuyang, the first Living Buddha, in 1709. Labrang means "Palace for the Buddha" in Tibetan language.
