Rongbo Monastery, built in 1899 (the Iron-Ox Year on the Tibetan Calendar), is located in the Tingri County of Shigatse Prefecture of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
The Monastery was set up by the Nyingma Sect, the oldest one among the four major schools of the Tibetan Buddhism. "Nyingma" literally means "ancient" and the school was founded in the eighth century.
Rongbo Monastery consists of a main temple and eight small ones with 250 lamas and 350 nuns, among whom 15 nuns and 7 lamas are from Nepal.
