The Gyanag Mani Stone Mounds in Yushu, Northwest China's Qinghai Province [Photo/ Chinanews. com]

Mani stone mounds, or holy stone mounds, are  piles of stones carved with the six-syllable mantra prayer or other propitious symbols. The stones are piled up by believers out of strong Buddhist belief and are sacredly respected.
