In recent years, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region has stepped up efforts to protect the rights and interests of its women and children, greatly improving their living and developing conditions.
Tibet announced the implementation of "2001-2010 Tibet Women and Children Plan" as well as the formulation of "2011-2015 Tibet Women and Children Development Plan" at its governmental news release conference held on February 20.
"Tibet has always given priority to the development of women's and children's undertakings and followed the basic national policies of equal rights for men and women as well as the optimization of children," stated Tsamcho, chairman of Tibet Women Federation as well as deputy director of Tibet Women and Children Working Committee at the news release conference.
As reported, Tibet has increased its educational expenses for women and children by 514.3 % to 6.08 billion yuan (nearly one billion dollars) in 2010 from 1.18 billion yuan (about 188 million dollars) in 2001, the medical expenses by 728.18 % to 3.2 billion yuan (about 509 million dollars) from 440 million yuan (about 70 million dollars), and the social security and employment expenses by 733.6% to 3.19 billion yuan (507.04 million dollars) from 435 billion yuan (about 69.12 million dollars).
Nowadays, the educational level of Tibetan women and children is continually increasing. The enrollment rate of school-aged girls has amounted to 99%, that of junior middle school girls to 98%, and that of senior middle school girls to over 60% while the female adult literacy rate has exceeded 82% with that of teenagers hitting 98%, and the senior women technicians have taken up 31.9%.
