A medical team left Beijing on Dec. 16 for Tibet to carry out free screening work for kids with congenital heart disease in southwest Tibet's Shigaste.
During the 15-day screening, the medical team, composed of staff members from China Charity Federation and General Hospital of Armed Police Forces, would visit Tibetan counties of Shigaste, including Gyantse, Khangmar, Gampa and Yadong.
Tibetan kids confirmed with congenital heart disease will receive the free surgery in Beijing during the New Year's Day holidays, said Deng Tongshan, deputy president of China Charity Federation.
"Since it was launched on Feb. 26, 2011, the recue action has cured 417 kids with congenital heart disease from Xinjiang, Yunnan, Guangxi, Tibet, etc., including 50 Tibetan kids," added Deng.
Data show that the congenital heart disease is one of the most serious congenital diseases with its incidence of 6‰-9‰ among newborn babies. At present, China has 2 million kids with congenital heart disease in need of surgeries and about 120,000 babies are born with heart disease annually.
