In Pumaqangtang with an average altitude of 5500 meters, there is the world's highest primary school: Pumaqangtang Primary School.
Pumaqangtang, means "grasslands inside snow mountains" in Tibetan language. It is located in the midpiece of Himalayas and only 25 kilometers away from Bhutan. The average altitude of Pumaqangtang village is as high as 5500 meters with annul temperature of minus three celsius degree, and the lowest temperature can reach minus 40 celsius degree. Gale and blizzard take place here most of the time as winter can last as long as nine months.
Pumaqangtang is comprises of six administrative villages and 12 natural villages with a population of 967. Village people there live on pasturing.
