Built in 1027, Xalhu Monastery is located 20 kilometers southeast of Shigatse Prefecture of Tibet. It is famous for its Tibetan and Han architectural styles. It also witnessed friendship between ethnic Tibetan and Han groups.

Buton Rinpoche (1290-1364), founder of the Xalhu Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, had been living here and set up the Xalhu Sect.

Rare Tangka, frescoes, copper altar and stone pots are preserved in this monastery.
