Qinghai earmarks 147 mln yuan to subsidize one-child families

Northwest China's Qinghai Province has earmarked 147 million yuan (23.3 million U.S. dollars) for awards and subsidies for one-child families this year, the local family planning department said Sunday.

The population and family planning committee and departments of finance, human resources and social security of the province will jointly provide funding for medical insurance of children and pension insurance for parents from one-child families in urban areas, according to the committee.

The province also will use the funds to award one-child families from rural areas, or minority families that have given up having a third child, granting 1,000 to 6,000 yuan to each family, the statement said.

The province also will subsidize one-child families if their only child had died or was disabled.

Qinghai's population is made up of mostly of Han and Tibetan ethnic groups.

According to China's Family Planning Policy, most urban families are allowed to have just one child, while farmers and ethnic minorities are allowed to have a second child if the first was a girl.
