Tibetan lamas reading with villagers

"Not only we, but also villagers and kids all like to read all kinds of books here," said Jangcai, librarian of the Sera Monastery.

At the foot of the Wuze Hill in Sera to the north of Lhasa, the Sera Monastery is one of the three great monasteries in Lhasa and one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

Covering about 100 square meters, the library of the Sera Monastery established in 2007 has been equipped with more than 10,000 books thanks to the support of the government.

It is reported that Tibet is to set up 480 libraries in monasteries in 2011 and it is expected that each monastery will have a library at the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).

From 2007 to 2010, Tibet set up a library in the Drepung Monastery, the Razheng Monastery, the Curpu Monastery and the Nyethang Monastery besides the Sera Monastery with a total investment of 250,000 yuan.
