Khampa men: as free as wind

“I enjoy the freedom on the horseback, which the headman never has; I roam all over the world, and under the blue sky, my home is the earth." [Photo/ wlj427]

"Stories of ancestors mark on their forehead; the high clouds hold their laughter. Their chests are the wild grassland growing love; girls hate them for they are as free as wind. Their blood shed the sounds of horse's hoof; their eyes shine the brightness of the sun. When highland barley wine pours in their heart, the whole world is on their hands. "

- Khampa men by Yadon

Khampa men can be easily recognized in the crowd. They are generally tall and well built, fearless and open of countenance. With purple faces and broad shoulders, they walk in big strides on the street like moving hills. They are serious and calm, but their eyes filled with irrepressible passion.

Kindness and hatred are clearly distinguished to Khampa men, and they generally solve problems with duel. If the other one is shorter or weaker, they would allow him first. After the duel, the duelists would be friends again. They would drink together with bandaged hands or head.

In addition, the Khampa men are not only valiant, but also very good at doing business. With the social habit of doing business, very rich Khampa merchants appear in every generation and they are important donors of temples in Tibet. Khampa merchants enjoy high reputation for their credit of keeping promise and courage of taking risk. Their footprints can be found everywhere in Tibet and the surrounding areas.

Khampa men love horses, for which represent the freedom above a state of survival, but also a galloping power. In the lyric of "Song of robbers", it goes, "I enjoy the freedom on the horseback, which the headman never has; I roam all over the world, and under the blue sky, my home is the earth." Moreover, Knives and guns are also Khampa men’s favorite.

They are brave enough to despise death. When the British armies invaded Tibet, the warriors from Kham drove the enemies to fear. Even today, the heavy swords left by Khampa generals, which once killed numerous enemies, are still shining with scaring light, leaving no one dare to touch.

Khampa men's enthusiasm of love and loyalty to faith are incomparable. They never veil their love to anyone, but in the old time, they would not be chained by marriage. Those who were considered as heroes at a village or a county would roam freely all over the world. Nevertheless, they would cherish the real love until death. And those moving stories can be heard around Kham area.

Khampa men have pure and bright eyes and forehead. Their faith, love, happiness, and even whole life are related with the dependence and fight with nature. Thus the emotion is more enthusiastic, rough and different.
