Deep into the hinterland of the Yamzhog Yumco, there is an island barely known by outsiders. On this island live thousands of wild birds such as bar-headed geese and gulls. Due to preservation efforts by local government and residents in recent years, the number birds finding habitat here has increased significantly.
The Yamzhog Yumco Lake is located in Nanggarze County, Lhoka Prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region. It means “Jade lake” and “swan lake” in Tibetan language. It enjoys the reputation as the one of the three saint lakes in Tibet. The other two are the Mapham Yutso Lake and the Namco Lake.
