Major Tibetan monastery receives thousands of visitors daily

The average daily amount of visitors to the Jokhang Monastery in Lhasa had surpassed one thousand since the Sagya Dawa Festival began, a monk from this monastery told China News Service.

May 29, the 9th day of the 4th month in Tibetan Calendar and the day when Buddha renounced worldly life, was a mini peak for Tibetan Buddhist followers to pay homage to the Buddha, and the pilgrim boom would come on the Buddha's Nirvana Day, June 4 which is the 15th day of the 4th month in Tibetan Calendar, said monk Lhapa from the Jokhang Monastery.

Pilgrims chose to take ritual walks, pay homages, and do the Tibetan Buddhist prostrations during the morning, evening or at night in order to avoid the rush hours like the noontime, introduced the service staff from the Jokhang Monastery plaza administration office.

Tourism boomed along with the Buddhist festival, bringing tour groups of all sizes from home and abroad.

The ticket office at the door of Jokhang Monastery would sell out the portion tickets of each day soon after opening for business.

It was getting hot in Lhasa in late May, and the staffs laid out thousands of flowers and plants on the plaza to lower the temperature.

The Sagya Dawa Festival, the month-long festival to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and nirvana of the Buddha Sakyamuni, started on May 21 which was the 1st day of the 4th month in Tibetan Calendar in 2012.
