Tibet Museum to exhibit Tibetan New Year customs on Losar Day

An exhibition on Tibetan New Year customs is expected to be held at Tibet Museum in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region on Feb. 22, 2012, the first day of Losar or Tibetan New Year.

Since 2010, Tibet Museum has organized many new-year cultural activities for the Spring Festival and Tibetan New Year, enjoying great popularity among locals and tourists.

In fact, a similar cultural activity was held to show spring festival customs on Jan. 23, 2012, or the Chinese Lunar New Year Day.

One month later, Tibet Museum will host another cultural activity to display Tibetan New Year customs in a larger scale, and it's expected to receive over one thousand visitors, much more than those of the former activity.

The activity is projected to take place in the World Expo Middle Hall on its first floor and LED screens will be used to play various singing and dancing performances and Losar customs, said Tamdrin, deputy president of Tibet Museum.

"Such activities for the Spring Festival and Tibetan New Year can help disperse visitors to ensure not only the normal order of exhibition halls, but also the protection of exhibited cultural relics and the personal safety of visitors," added Tamdrin.

In addition, the Xuyan Hall will be decorated with diverse Tibetan ornaments to reproduce the scene of Tibetans spending Losar so that the domestic and foreign visitors can experience the unique Tibetan customs.

Meanwhile, visitors will be able to taste Tibetan specialties, for example Chemar (a mixture of roast barley flour and butter), and drink Tibetan beer to better experience the Tibetan culture.

Apart from the three exhibition boards for spring festival customs and riddles written on lanterns, the museum will add five boards to show Losar customs and riddles about Tibetan culture in both Chinese and Tibetan languages.

It will open a kids' room for them to play Tibetan chess, paint colors, kick shuttlecocks, etc., in a bid to attract more kids to join in the activity.

The one-day activity is scheduled to start at 10:00 AM and end at 05:30 PM on Feb. 22.
