According to the Education Department of Tibet Autonomous Region, preschool textbooks in both Chinese and Tibetan had been put into use in the agricultural and pastoral areas after the new semester started this fall. The bilingual textbooks had been being compiled since the second half of 2010.
In this semester, four subjects of the bilingual preschool textbooks for the fall semester have been used for junior (aged 3), middle (aged 5) and senior (aged 6) classes including "language"," art", "science and math"," society and health", in Tibetan agricultural and pastoral areas, and the winter-semester volume are being compiled currently.
In order to make better use of the textbook, the Education Department also organized training courses for preschool teachers in the agricultural and pastoral areas. From the end of July to early August, almost 200 backbone teachers from kindergartens at city, county and regional levels took part in the training.
Tsering Sonam, a parent, said, "I think it is very important for children to learn Mandarin. They should take a look around China if there's a chance in the future. It is difficult to communicate with others if they don't learn Mandarin."
Currently, the Tibetan local government has allocated 80 million yuan in the renovation of 79 village-level kindergartens and the expansion of regional-level ones.
